Emma Navarro prevailed over reigning US Open champion and fellow American Coco Gauff 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the fourth round Sunday to end the 20-year-old’s repeat bid.

As a result, Gauff will go the entire 2024 season without a major singles title. Despite the lack of overall success, Gauff is one of only two women this year to make it to the fourth round of every grand slam event.

Gauff won the first grand slam of her young career at last year’s US Open, beating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets.

Her only major title this year will be in doubles during the French Open.

Navarro, 23, will face Spaniard Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals.

Navarro is one of two Americans left on the women’s side, along with Jessica Pegula. Pegula will face Diana Shnaider for a chance to play in the quarters.

Gauff’s ousting is the latest in a US Open filled with upsets. On the men’s side, both Novak Djokovic, last year’s champ, and Carlos Alcaraz have been bounced from the tournament.
