Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs tore his ACL on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season, head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed Tuesday, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.
The All-Pro wideout will undergo surgery to repair the issue.
Diggs was injured in the third quarter of the Texans’ 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts while attempting to make a cut on a route. He grabbed his right knee after the play but was able to walk back to the locker room under his own power.
He recorded five receptions for 81 yards before exiting Sunday’s contest.
“It’s definitely a blow to us,” Ryans said. “He’s hurting, of course, and we’re hurting for him as well.”
Quarterback C.J. Stroud said, “I feel really bad for him. He was having the best time playing football in his career, that’s what he told us.”
Houston acquired the four-time Pro Bowler from the Buffalo Bills in April. Diggs was one of the major additions to a roster that made it to the AFC divisional round of the playoffs last season.
Diggs led the Texans with 47 receptions while adding 496 yards and three touchdowns in eight games. The star receiver recorded six consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns from 2018 through 2023.
The Maryland product is set to become a free agent this offseason after signing a restructured one-year, $22.5-million contract, per Spotrac.
The Texans are shorthanded at receiver without Diggs. Nico Collins is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and isn’t eligible to return until Week 10 at the earliest.
Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson, Robert Woods, and John Metchie are among the Houston wideouts expected to see more snaps.
The Texans face the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football in Week 9.
